Mary Ashworth, 1923 -- 2009

ESL giant authored 1979 study of BC education that exploded myths, reshaped understanding of province's treatment of minorities

2009.01.21 — Mary Ashworth, long-time professor in the UBC Faculty of Education and author of the 1979 New Star title The Forces Which Shaped Them: A History of the Education of Minority Group Children in British Columbia, died at her Salt Spring Island home on January 20.

A life-long enemy of racism and social injustice, Mary Ashworth was a pioneer in the field of English as a Second Language, and inspired a generation of young BC teachers. Her accomplishments were widely recognized, and she was awarded honourary doctorates from UBC, York University, and St. Mary's University as well as a Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal. A memorial service will be held at the Sal Spring Island United Church on February 7.
