Jean Barman

A native of Stephen, Minnesota, Jean Barman has an EdD in History of Education (UBC), an MLS (Berkeley) and an MA in Russian Studies (Harvard), and is professor emeritus at the University of BC. She is the author of over fifty articles and chapters and over twenty books, including The West Beyond the West: A History of British Columbia, one of the most significant books on our province's history, and French Canadians, Furs, and Indigenous Women in the Making of the Pacific Northwest, for which she received the 2015 Sir John A. Macdonald Prize, the Governor General's History Award for Scholarly Research, and the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on BC. In 2002 she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of her dedication to uncovering the history of BC.
